Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Convicted of Election Law Violations
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, by the Seoul Central District Court for making false statements during his 2022 presidential campaign. The court ruled that Yoon Suk Yeol lied about his relationship with a fortune teller and his past role as a state prosecutor. If the conviction is upheld by the Supreme Court, the conservative People Power Party may be forced to return approximately 40 billion won ($27 million) in government-reimbursed election expenses. This financial burden could potentially force the party to sell its headquarters in Yeouido to cover the costs. The ruling follows Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from office in April 2025 after a brief martial law decree in December 2024. While the party is currently appealing the verdict, officials note that the final financial impact will not be determined until the Supreme Court issues its final ruling.
