The Hong Kong Observatory warned residents of heavy showers and a chance of hail as Typhoon Noul intensified and moved toward the city. The storm is forecast to come within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong on Sunday morning, leading to the cancellation of more than 150 flights. The Observatory issued a No 3 typhoon signal at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, noting that the outer bands of intense thundery showers were already reaching the city. Officials will assess whether a higher signal is necessary between 9 p.m. and midnight. In response to the approaching storm, some schools cancelled afternoon classes, and the Housing Authority increased typhoon preparedness at various construction sites. The Observatory reported that Typhoon Noul moved steadily across the northeastern part of the South China Sea, causing local winds to strengthen progressively as it affected the coastal areas of Guangdong.
