SpaceX completes 13th Starship test flight with successful Indian Ocean splashdown and first production Starlink V3 satellite deployment
SpaceX successfully completed the 13th test flight of its Starship megarocket, achieving a precise splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The vehicle, a Version 3 iteration, traveled from South Texas to the ocean, where it remained intact after enduring temperatures up to 2,600° Fahrenheit during reentry. During the mission, the rocket deployed 20 production Starlink V3 satellites, marking the first time the company used the vehicle to launch operational satellites rather than simulators. While the Starship upper stage performed smoothly, the Super Heavy booster experienced engine issues during its boostback burn. Only 10 of the 33 engines successfully restarted for the landing sequence, resulting in a "hard" splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. Despite these hurdles, the flight provided critical data on the heat shield and Raptor engine reliability. NASA is currently utilizing a variant of the Starship upper stage as a lunar lander for the Artemis program, though a Government Accountability Office report noted that SpaceX is currently more than a year behind its original schedule for key lunar milestones.
