Pedro Sánchez Condemns European Reactions to Mass Migrant Influx in Ceuta
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned the "selfish, polarising and unlawful" reactions of several European nations to a recent mass influx of approximately 50,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The surge, which occurred after border controls between Morocco and Spain broke down, resulted in at least 67 deaths and prompted Italy to temporarily suspend the Schengen zone agreement with Spain for one month. Sánchez stated that the Spanish government successfully restored control over the border within 48 hours, blaming human trafficking networks for misinterpreting a recent Supreme Court ruling. While Spain has moved toward a more welcoming immigration policy, including a regularization program for undocumented migrants, the incident has sparked diplomatic friction. The administration announced that Spain will install floating maritime barriers to prevent further illegal crossings. Meanwhile, President Trump called the situation a "catastrophe" and described it as an "invasion" of the country by hundreds of thousands of people.
