Emiliano Garcia-Page, the head of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, praised the "enormous" work of emergency crews as two major wildfires continue to impact Spain. The first blaze, located near La Mierla in the Guadalajara province, has burned over 16,000 hectares. Driven by strong winds and high temperatures, the fire has forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents across 25 municipalities. Simultaneously, a second wildfire in the Zaragoza province has become the most destructive forest fire of 2026, burning approximately 15,400 hectares. While the Orés fire showed favorable behavior overnight, it remains far from under control. Both blazes are part of a severe wildfire season exacerbated by a prolonged drought and climate change. To date, over 70,000 hectares have burned across the country this year. These fires follow a deadly wildfire in Almeria province earlier this month, which killed 13 people. Emergency services continue to deploy hundreds of firefighters and dozens of aircraft to protect nearby villages and natural areas.
