Special prosecutor Laurie White dismissed all 16 felony counts against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill on Wednesday, ending a criminal case centered on a dispute over the state's court system. The indictment originally accused Murrill of public intimidation and malfeasance for sending letters to New Orleans officials who opposed a Republican-led overhaul of the local courts. Murrill characterized the prosecution as a "malicious" and "extortionist" threat, arguing that she was simply performing her official duties by explaining the law to city leaders. The dismissal followed a letter from New Orleans officials, including Mayor Helena Moreno and District Attorney Jason Williams, urging the charges be dropped. Republican Governor Jeff Landry and Murrill both criticized the indictment as politically motivated. Landry, who spoke with President Trump regarding the case, has called for state and federal investigations into the grand jury proceedings. Additionally, Congressman Clay Higgins has requested that the Department of Justice review the case to ensure the proceedings were not tainted by political motivations.
