Ashley Dreahn faces financial strain as federal student loan defaults reach record levels across the United States
Ashley Dreahn is among the 9.5 million federal student loan borrowers currently in default, a figure representing one in five borrowers nationwide. The surge in defaults occurred after a pandemic-era payment pause and a subsequent one-year buffer period ended in late 2024. Data from the Office of Federal Student Aid shows that $233.3 billion of the $1.7 trillion in federally-backed loans are now in default. The administration announced a simplification of the repayment system by eliminating the SAVE plan, the most generous income-driven option. While the administration held off on involuntary wage garnishments in January, experts warn that collections are likely to begin within the next year. For-profit college students are particularly affected, with 33% of those borrowers at least 90 days late on payments. Ashley Dreahn, who filed for bankruptcy in 2022, discovered her loans had ballooned to over $94,000. She noted that the process remains opaque for many, leading to a mix of despair and confusion among borrowers struggling to balance rising costs with debt repayment.
