FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas confirmed Monday that the largest cluster of cyclosporiasis cases is linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations across five states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 1,644 infections in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. While the majority of cases have been reported in Michigan, the agency noted that the total number of infections is likely much higher than reported because many people recover without seeking medical testing. The investigation follows a voluntary recall by Taylor Farms de Mexico of iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. Although the agency initially reported a positive test result for a sample of lettuce not included in the recall, it later clarified the result was a false positive. Kyle Diamantas emphasized that this error does not change the overwhelming epidemiological data linking the outbreak to the Taylor Farms lettuce. The FDA continues to work with state partners to investigate other potential sources of the parasite.
