Heavy rains across Central and West Texas have triggered significant flash flooding, resulting in two confirmed deaths and widespread property damage. John Mark Steward, a 65-year-old Kerrville resident, was killed when water overtook his home, while a 74-year-old man died in Uvalde County after his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. The National Weather Service issued several flood warnings as rivers including the Guadalupe, Pedernales, and Rio Grande rose rapidly. In Kerrville, the Guadalupe River rose 32 feet in just four hours, nearly reaching the crest of last year's catastrophic flood. The heavy rainfall caused the destruction of bridges, roads, and numerous homes, including an RV park where residents were forced to evacuate as water rose 5 feet deep. Governor Greg Abbott requested a presidential disaster declaration to assist with the recovery process. The administration announced that the region will receive aid to kickstart repairs. While the current flooding is less deadly than the 2025 disaster, officials are urging residents to remain cautious as the region transitions to a hot and dry forecast next week.
