Taco Bell and Chipotle monitor a nationwide cyclospora outbreak as infection cases surpass the previous record of 4,700.
Taco Bell has voluntarily removed limited ingredients at select restaurants as a precautionary measure following a nationwide outbreak of the cyclospora parasite. The infection, commonly known as "the diarrhea parasite," has surpassed the 2019 record of approximately 4,700 cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 141 hospitalizations related to the infection as of July 13. While Taco Bell investigates a potential link to its menu, Chipotle stated that it does not believe its sourced ingredients are associated with the outbreak. Both chains are monitoring the situation closely to ensure guest safety. The outbreak has sparked lighthearted social media engagement from various brands. Dude Wipes and Tushy utilized the "explosive" diarrhea symptoms to promote their bathroom products, while Arby’s and Wendy’s traded jokes regarding the consumption of lettuce. Additionally, Merriam-Webster provided educational context by explaining the Greek etymology of the word "diarrhea," noting that it shares a root with the word "stream."
