Abdul Ballout killed by police after driving van into Berlin Pride crowd during suspected Islamist terrorist attack
Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old suspected Islamist terrorist, was shot dead by police the day after he drove a van into a crowd at Berlin’s Pride festival. The attack resulted in one death and 29 injuries. Experts suggest that Ballout did not genuinely want to distance himself from Islamist ideology, making him a poor candidate for deradicalization programs. German authorities are currently debating the implications of the attack. Jamuna Oehlmann, executive director of the Federal Working Group on Religiously Motivated Extremism, noted that radicalization is often driven by personal crises and the simplifying of the world into good and evil. Oehlmann expressed concern over the recent announcement by Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien to restructure the Live Democracy! funding program, which will affect 23 of the 40 member organizations of the Federal Working Group. This move may force organizations to focus on fundraising rather than the core work of preventing radicalization.
