Maura Healey Extends Commuter Rail Discounts and Launches New MBTA Fare Pilots
Governor Maura Healey announced a series of new MBTA pilot programs and extensions to make public transportation more affordable for Massachusetts residents. Starting this fall, the MBTA will launch three new fare pilots, including an expanded two-hour unlimited transfer window, the elimination of higher express bus fares, and free rides for Massachusetts residents aged 75 and older who no longer drive. Additionally, Governor Maura Healey is extending two popular Commuter Rail summer programs through November 2026. These include 50 percent off monthly commuter rail passes and a companion discount of $1 per way on weekends. The administration noted that these changes aim to put money back in people's pockets while providing more flexibility for riders. MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng stated that June saw the highest ridership since before the pandemic, and the revenue from the 2025-2026 fiscal year exceeded projections, allowing for these new promotions.
