Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorse Abdul El-Sayed in a heated Michigan Senate primary.
Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined former public health official Abdul El-Sayed on Saturday to campaign for his seat in the Michigan Senate primary. The progressive heavyweights arrived as part of a "People versus the Powerful" tour, seeking to bolster El-Sayed against his opponent, Hayley Stevens. The primary has become a significant proxy fight between the Democratic party's progressive and establishment wings. While Stevens enjoys the backing of party leaders like Chuck Schumer, El-Sayed has secured endorsements from Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez. During her speech, Ocasio-Cortez denounced the administration as "corrupt" and urged voters to choose El-Sayed to defeat the legacy of Donald Trump. The candidates also highlighted the influence of outside spending. Ocasio-Cortez criticized the millions of dollars spent by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Stevens, while El-Sayed has consistently disavowed the lobby's funding. The winner of the primary will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November.
