Marco Rubio convenes international summit to address the rise of far-left political terrorism

Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted a ministerial meeting on Thursday with leaders from 66 nations to address the "alarming rise" of far-left political terrorism. The administration announced a new visa restriction policy targeting members of far-left and anti-fascist groups who have incited acts of terrorism. During the summit, Marco Rubio argued that left-wing violence has been a "blind spot" in global counterterrorism doctrine, accusing critics of dismissing leftist acts as mere "excesses of idealism" while overemphasizing right-wing violence. He described leftist activists as "enemies of civilization" who often rely on "poisonous resentment." Supporting the initiative, Stephen Miller characterized left-wing violence as being motivated by envy and hatred, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the need to use financial tools to dismantle these networks. While the administration has prioritized the far-left as a primary threat, data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies suggests that while left-wing incidents have increased, they remain lower than historical levels of right-wing and jihadist violence.
