Panama ranks as the world's best country for expatriates for the third consecutive year
Panama has secured the top spot in the 2026 Expat Insider survey, marking the third consecutive year it has been ranked as the premier destination for expatriates. The survey, conducted by InterNations, evaluated 31 countries based on five indices: Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance, and Expat Essentials. Panama excelled in Working Abroad and Personal Finance, while also ranking highly for its welcoming local population and accessible visa options. It remains a primary destination for retirees, with 37% of respondents living there already retired. Mexico followed in second place, distinguished by its ease of settling in and strong personal finances. Thailand ranked third, noted as the country with the happiest expatriates and the most affordable housing. At the bottom of the rankings, Norway finished in 31st place, with expatriates reporting significant difficulties in social integration and a high cost of living. Germany and Türkiye also ranked near the bottom, hindered by language barriers and economic instability.
