Kimberly Johnson reports that multiple wildfires and a lightning storm have triggered widespread evacuations and land closures across Central Oregon.
Kimberly Johnson, a public information officer for Central Oregon Fire Management, reports that a cluster of lightning-ignited blazes is driving a high-intensity fire season across the state. A major lightning storm on July 15 ignited over 70 new fires, many of which expanded rapidly due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. The Crosswhite Fire and the East Evans Creek Fire have emerged as significant blazes, with the latter burning over 13,000 acres. In response to the growing Rowe Creek Complex, the Bureau of Land Management has implemented a full closure of public land along both sides of the John Day River. Firefighters are currently prioritizing the protection of homes and infrastructure as resources are stretched thin across five counties. While some fires have seen progress in containment, others remain at 0% containment as crews battle erratic behavior driven by thunder cells. Residents are advised to monitor local sheriff's offices for rapid changes in evacuation orders.
