Three Greek Firefighters Die as Wildfires Ravage Southern Europe
Three Greek firefighters, Pantelis Diamantakis and Emmanouil Stratidakis, died while battling a massive wildfire in southern Rethymno on the island of Crete. The blaze, fueled by gale-force winds and extreme heat, forced the evacuation of approximately 8,000 residents and tourists from the Agia Galini settlement. While the Greek fire service manages the Crete blaze, Spain and France are also facing significant wildfire activity. In Spain, the Burgohondo fire has become the largest recorded wildfire in the country's history, forcing 40,000 people to flee their homes. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the situation near the capital is improving but remains under national government oversight. Across the continent, the fourth heatwave of the summer is making fires harder to quell. The European Commission has mobilized international support, with countries like Romania, Greece, and Poland providing firefighting resources to France and Spain. Experts warn that climate change is accelerating the temperature rise in Europe, making wildfires more frequent and intense.
