RWE U.S. Offshore reached a $1.22 billion settlement with the administration to relinquish its offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana. The agreement allows the German energy company to redirect its investment toward fossil fuel projects, including a $900 million stake in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas project and a $300 million reservation for 15 natural gas peaker plants. This deal is the fifth such agreement struck by the administration to discourage the expansion of offshore wind energy in favor of fossil fuels. To date, the administration has spent nearly $4 billion in settlements to cancel offshore wind projects. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum praised the move, stating that Americans deserve an energy system built on common sense rather than costly subsidies. Conversely, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse argued that the lease buybacks are a way for the administration to favor fossil fuel donors at the expense of consumers. The administration adopted this strategy after federal courts thwarted efforts to stop offshore wind development through executive action.
