Microsoft has committed $60 million to the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, a national initiative designed to double the productivity of American research by embedding artificial intelligence into the scientific process. The administration announced that this investment will support the Department of Energy’s 17 National Laboratories by providing a unified platform that combines AI, supercomputing, and quantum systems. To facilitate this collaboration, Microsoft is launching SPARK, a new coordination hub and program office. This hub will manage the integration of Microsoft’s secure cloud and AI portfolio, including Azure and Microsoft Discovery, into the Genesis Mission. The partnership aims to move researchers from hypothesis to discovery more quickly while maintaining security and reproducibility. The investment also supports specific projects across various laboratories. These include accelerating nuclear energy deployment, strengthening biosecurity, and developing autonomous laboratories for materials discovery. By combining infrastructure with human expertise, the administration aims to establish American technology as the foundation for the nation's scientific leadership and economic growth.
