President Donald Trump Backs Off Promise to Grant Ukraine Manufacturing Licenses for Patriot Missile Systems
President Donald Trump clarified during a cabinet meeting at Camp David that the U.S. has not yet officially agreed to grant Ukraine the licenses to manufacture Patriot missile systems. This marks a shift from his previous commitment made just weeks ago at a NATO summit, where he suggested Kyiv would be able to produce the advanced technology domestically. President Donald Trump explained that the technology is a "hard thing to give away" because countries that receive it could eventually "turn on you." He emphasized that while the U.S. and Ukraine are still discussing the matter, Washington will continue to build many plants to produce the missiles domestically. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to view the Patriot system as a top priority for defending against Russian ballistic missiles. Despite the recent noncommittal stance from the administration, Zelenskyy remains optimistic about co-production and has maintained communication with U.S. officials to work through the details of the agreement.
