Tom Homan, the White House border czar, stated that body cameras are essential for allowing the American people to see exactly what officers see during enforcement actions. This push for technology follows two fatal shootings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers earlier this month in Texas and Maine, where the agents involved were not wearing cameras. The administration announced that ICE officers may now resume vehicle stops, provided at least one officer on the team is equipped with a body camera. This directive follows a brief suspension of stops intended to review procedures after the two shootings. While the rollout of cameras was delayed by government shutdowns caused by Democratic members of Congress, the administration announced that more than half of all ICE field offices are now equipped with the technology. The remaining offices are expected to receive cameras within 60 days. Homan noted that while the $20 million initially approved by Democrats was insufficient, the recent $70 billion package ensures the cameras are being deployed nationwide.
