President Trump delivered a primetime address to highlight newly declassified intelligence regarding the security of the American election system. The administration announced that China illicitly acquired voter-registration data for as many as 220 million Americans, which the president described as the largest compromise of election data in history. During the speech, President Trump alleged that intelligence officials deliberately suppressed information about these cybersecurity attacks, with some officials even running a "shadow government" to keep the extent of the meddling from becoming public knowledge. To address these vulnerabilities, the administration directed the Department of Justice, the FBI, the CIA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to investigate the reasons for the information's concealment and to hold responsible officials accountable. The president also highlighted that approximately 278,000 voter-registration records were flagged as potentially belonging to noncitizens. To improve future integrity, President Trump demanded that the Senate pass the SAVE America Act, which would establish formal voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements for federal elections.
