Abdullah Guler submits draft law to Turkish parliament to facilitate the disbandment of the Kurdistan Workers' Party
Abdullah Guler, chair of the Justice and Development Party's parliamentary group, announced that a draft law aimed at ending the decades-long conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) will be submitted to parliament on Wednesday. The legislation, titled 'Law on Ensuring National Solidarity and Social Integrity,' provides a framework for the disarmament and judicial treatment of the PKK, a terrorist organization designated by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. The bill seeks to manage the return of thousands of former militants from hideouts in Iraq and Syria, offering an effective pardon for approximately 4,000 members who were not directly involved in violence. However, senior figures like Abdullah Ocalan will not receive a sentence reduction. The administration announced that the law will be a temporary framework, lasting up to four years, and will only take effect once Turkish intelligence confirms the group has surrendered its weapons. The initiative has received broad support across the political spectrum, aiming to achieve a terror-free region while preserving Turkey's core national values.
