A bus collision on a Syrian highway killed at least 35 people and injured 30 others on Saturday.
At least 35 people died and 30 others were injured after two buses collided on the Deir Az Zor–Damascus road in Syria on Saturday. The accident occurred between al-Sukhnah and Palmyra, a stretch of highway connecting eastern Syria to the capital. The Syrian Interior Ministry reported that one bus was transporting members of the Internal Security Forces while the other carried civilians. Dr Najib al-Naasan, the director of the Health Ministry's ambulance and emergency department, confirmed the death toll. Following the crash, several helicopters were deployed to the site to medically evacuate the injured to Homs Military Hospital. The collision highlights the poor state of Syria’s civilian infrastructure following nearly 14 years of civil war. The specific route is often referred to as the "road of death" due to frequent daily accidents. Minister of Disaster Management and Emergency Response Raed al-Saleh previously noted that road traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in the country.
