Jackie Stepp reports that the Asheville Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that left two people dead and seven others injured.

Jackie Stepp, the interim chief of the Asheville Police Department, confirmed that officers responded to a shooting on the 250 block of Biltmore Avenue at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Sunday. The incident occurred as people were departing from nearby establishments, specifically the Dalton Distillery and the Smile Starters parking lot. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts from first responders. Seven additional victims were transported to Mission Hospital, where five are currently in stable condition and two are receiving additional medical care. Detectives and forensic technicians have processed the large crime scene, collecting numerous shell casings. Stepp noted that the shooting was likely not a random act of violence but was instead related to a prior gun violence incident. While the suspects remain unaccounted for, the administration of the police department is working to identify those responsible. Investigators have reopened Biltmore Avenue and Short Coxe Avenue following the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department at 828-252-1110.
