Typhoon Noul makes landfall in southern China as the strongest storm to hit the country so far this year.

Typhoon Noul made landfall along the coast of Huidong county in the southern Guangdong province at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on Sunday. As the strongest typhoon to hit China this year, the storm brought gale-force winds and heavy rain to southern China, including Hong Kong. The storm prompted the evacuation of more than 715,000 people in Guangdong province, where authorities placed the region on high alert for flash floods. In Hong Kong, at least nine people were injured, and over 350 flights were canceled at the local airport. While the typhoon moved inland and began to weaken, it left many trees uprooted in Huilai county and caused a large scaffolding on a high-rise building to collapse on Saturday. The National Meteorological Center expects heavy to torrential rains to persist across southern Guangdong and southeastern Fujian provinces through Monday morning. The storm also brought rainfall to parts of southern and eastern Taiwan as it moved away from the island on Saturday.
