Ukraine Intercepts Missiles Amid Calls from Emmanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for European Shield
Ukrainian forces reported intercepting Russian ballistic missiles on Tuesday, marking the first time in nearly two weeks such sophisticated weaponry was downed. Despite this success, other incoming missiles caused fires at warehouses and damaged a school in Kyiv. During a military parade in Paris, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to join nine other nations in forming a coalition aimed at building a shared ballistic missile shield for Europe, a system expected to be low-cost and mass-produced within a year. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the commitment from the international group. The ongoing conflict saw Ukraine continue long-range strikes against Russian infrastructure. Separately, concerning military support, Donald Trump said last week the U.S. would grant Ukraine a license to build its own Patriot missile systems, although such systems remain costly and slow to manufacture. The administration has been closely watched by allies regarding future defense commitments for European security.
