Ukraine Targets Russia's Largest E-commerce Retailer Wildberries to Disrupt Supply Chains and Pressure the Russian Economy
Ukraine has launched a strategic campaign of long-range drone strikes against Wildberries, Russia's largest online retail platform. By targeting at least a dozen logistics hubs, Ukraine aims to disrupt the military supply chain and increase the financial burden on Russian businesses. While the Kremlin maintains that Wildberries is a civilian target, the retailer has served as a major supply channel for the military, offering over 200,000 items including drone components and tactical gear. The attacks have significantly impacted the Russian economy, with sellers losing an estimated $1.87 billion to $2 billion in merchandise. To mitigate these losses, Wildberries has updated its terms to classify strikes as force majeure events, exempting the company from liability for destroyed stock. The administration of the Russian government is considering financial assistance for the company through state-controlled banks like VTB and Sberbank. These strikes also serve as a psychological operation, bringing the war home to ordinary Russians by disrupting the daily convenience of a platform used by tens of millions of people.
