Scott Kirby highlights United Airlines' long wait for the $22.5 billion Washington Dulles International Airport overhaul
The administration announced a comprehensive $22.5 billion plan to overhaul Washington Dulles International Airport, significantly expanding the facility to include 5 million square feet of additional space. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby noted that the airline has waited decades for this redevelopment, as the current midfield concourses have served as temporary structures for 45 years. The project will replace the aging C and D concourses with state-of-the-art facilities, while preserving the iconic main terminal designed by Eero Saarinen. President Trump emphasized the inclusion of a massive 32,000-space parking garage, which he described as the largest in the world. The plan also includes modernized baggage and security infrastructure, expanded AeroTrain service, and new pedestrian tunnels to replace the current "people movers." Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that construction could begin in the spring of 2027. The project will be financed through municipal bonds by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, United Airlines, and other airlines, with the administration seeking Congressional approval for various components of the plan.
