The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order authorizing the Southwest Power Pool to utilize backup power sources to maintain electricity across 17 states. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the administration is tapping into more than 35 gigawatts of unused backup generation nationwide to prevent potential blackouts during a period of high heat. The order, which was requested by the Southwest Power Pool, allows for the use of these resources as a last resort before declaring a severe energy emergency. Chris Wright noted that the administration is reversing previous energy subtraction policies that weakened the grid. He emphasized that the administration is using every available tool to ensure Americans have continued access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy. The order is set to expire on August 3. While the grid is currently meeting demands, the order serves as a proactive measure to ensure stability during peak usage times when wind energy outputs are low.
