Colt Gray Pleads Guilty to 55 Charges Following 2024 Apalachee High School Shooting

Colt Gray, 16, has pleaded guilty to 55 charges, including murder, for the 2024 school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. The attack resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers, while injuring nine others. During the sentencing phase, the judge noted that the minimum penalty is life with parole, while the maximum is life without parole. The court heard emotional victim impact statements from survivors and relatives. Breanna Schermerhorn, whose son Mason Schermerhorn was killed, emphasized that while adults missed warning signs, Colt Gray held sole responsibility for the ultimate decision to fire. Other victims, including Shayna Aspinwall and Ismael Angulo, urged the judge to impose a life sentence without parole to reflect the permanent loss of their loved ones. Evidence presented included a notebook by Colt Gray detailing his step-by-step plans and a shrine to Florida shooter Nikolas Cruz. Investigators also played a recording of Colt Gray’s initial police interview, where he expressed deep remorse and described feeling "fogginess" and hearing voices during the attack.
