Southern California Edison equipment caused the deadly 2025 Eaton fire that killed 19 people and destroyed nearly 10,000 homes.
Los Angeles County fire officials released a report on Tuesday confirming that the 2025 Eaton fire was caused by electrical arcing on an out-of-service transmission tower owned by Southern California Edison. The blaze, which scorched 22 square miles, killed 19 people and destroyed more than 9,400 homes and businesses. Investigators found that two electrical arcing events occurred in quick succession, causing burning material to fall from the tower onto dry vegetation below. The fire developed rapidly under extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures and powerful winds. While Southern California Edison has acknowledged its role in the ignition, the utility has also filed lawsuits claiming that local agencies failed to provide timely evacuation warnings and sufficient water resources. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the report to determine if criminal charges are warranted. The Eaton fire occurred simultaneously with the Palisades fire, which was also one of the most destructive blazes in California's history.
