Jackie the bald eagle remains in critical condition at a wildlife center after being rescued from a territorial dispute near Big Bear Lake.
Jackie is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center after being found grounded near Big Bear Lake. The bird was rescued by the San Dimas Raptor Rescue team after a territorial fight with two subadult eagles left her too weak to fly. While Jackie remains alert and is eating, her condition is described as very serious. Veterinary teams have identified severe anemia and kidney inflammation, though the exact underlying cause is still being determined. Experts are currently testing the eagle for environmental toxins, including lead, zinc, and rodenticides. X-rays have already ruled out physical obstructions like fishing hooks or sinkers. While Jackie recovers, her mate, Shadow, continues to defend the nest and care for their two eaglets, Luna and Sandy. Officials note that while the eagle is not banded, her absence from the nest for over a week makes it highly likely she is the famous resident. Rescuers say it may take weeks or longer before Jackie can return to the wild.
