Phu Nguyen was arrested by ICE after a crowd of rioters interrupted an attempted arrest at a Las Vegas airport.
Phu Nguyen, a 57-year-old Australian citizen born in Vietnam, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a public confrontation at Harry Reid International Airport. The incident occurred when two plainclothes agents attempted to handcuff Nguyen, who was an illegal immigrant who had overstayed his visa since 2015. As the agents held him to the ground, a crowd of rioters surrounded the scene, prompting the officers to abandon the arrest to de-escalate the situation. The administration announced that the agents chose to walk away for officer safety, eventually securing Nguyen's arrest the following day at Los Angeles International Airport. While the Department of Homeland Security confirmed Nguyen will receive full due process, local officials and observers criticized the agents for lacking uniforms and body cameras. Senator Jacky Rosen criticized the agency for acting with impunity, while the administration's mass hiring of agents continues to face scrutiny as the nation pursues a push to remove dangerous criminals.
