Utah maintains its position as the top-ranked state in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best States rankings.
Utah has secured the No. 1 overall ranking in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best States rankings for the fourth consecutive year. The report evaluates states based on eight categories, including economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Eric Gertler, the U.S. News Executive Chairman and CEO, stated that the results reflect a broader realignment of American economic growth, with states in the Midwest and South gaining ground as businesses and workers migrate toward more affordable regions. While Utah held the primary spot, Texas claimed the nation's highest-ranked economy, leading in job growth and GDP growth. Other notable gains were seen in the Midwest, with South Dakota climbing to No. 2 and North Dakota jumping to No. 4. Florida finished in the eighth position overall, falling from its No. 6 spot last year. However, the state maintained a strong performance in education, finishing in the top three nationally.
