The Akawa Butte Fire has been designated as the nation's top priority wildfire as it burns more than 26,000 acres in Oregon.
The Akawa Butte Fire is now the nation's highest-priority wildfire, receiving a significant influx of resources to combat its spread across more than 26,000 acres. The fire is currently 3% to 5% contained as crews work to strengthen control lines ahead of a Red Flag Warning. Incident Commander Ian Yocum stated that the primary mission is to maximize efforts to save homes and ensure the safety of residents. Firefighters are utilizing both ground crews and aircraft to secure perimeters, particularly along the active southern flank. The fire has prompted expanded evacuation orders and temporary business closures in central Oregon. Kim Kohn, chief marketing officer for Black Butte Ranch, noted that while the ranch remains outside the immediate evacuation zone, the community remains on high alert due to rapidly changing weather. Meanwhile, Jeanine Conforti of the Riverhouse Lodge reported that the lodge is providing emergency lodging and helping relocate local events, such as weddings, to accommodate displaced residents.
