Martial Zaninetti Describes the Scale of France's Megafire as Exceptional While 198,000 Residents Return Home
The administration announced that approximately 198,000 people were allowed to return home after a massive wildfire in southwestern France was contained within its perimeter. Martial Zaninetti, the mayor of Le Porge, noted that the conditions this year were totally exceptional and the scale of the fire was beyond anything seen before. The blaze consumed 162 square miles of pine forest west of Bordeaux, an area four times the size of Paris. While the fire is contained, it is not yet fixed, with active sectors and buried hot spots persisting. Firefighters used tactical burns to manage the fire edges. Meanwhile, other regions in France and Greece faced renewed displacement. In the Greece, a fire near Porto Germeno surrendered a pristine forest to the flames, with local resident Minas Tzortzanis describing the destruction as total. The fires across Europe are being driven by rising temperatures and prolonged drought. Scientists note that Europe is Earth's fastest-warming continent, which allows fires to burn more intensely and spread faster.
