Andy Beshear Demands Mitch McConnell Prove Capacity to Serve or Resign from the U.S. Senate
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear issued a blunt ultimatum to Senator Mitch McConnell, demanding that the senior senator provide proof of his ability to serve or resign. The demand comes after McConnell has been out of the public eye for 43 days following a hospitalization on June 14. While McConnell's office released photos and statements from the attending physician, Beshear argued that these do not sufficiently detail whether the senator can speak, reason, or perform his official duties. Beshear also sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, requesting an investigation into McConnell's condition if the senator remains unable to provide a direct verbal response. Thune responded that the matter is primarily between McConnell and the people of Kentucky. Because Kentucky law requires a special election to fill a vacancy rather than a gubernatorial appointment, the seat may remain empty until the next term unless a special election is called. McConnell is expected to retire at the end of 2026, with Republican Andy Barr favored to succeed him.
