The Gordie Howe International Bridge will open to traffic on Monday, July 27, at noon. This nearly $5 billion project provides a new six-lane span across the Detroit River, offering a businesses a faster and less expensive route for commercial trucks moving between the United States and Canada. Canada paid to build the bridge at an estimated cost of $6.4 billion, with an agreement that Canada will share some toll revenue with the U.S. government for 15 years. While U.S. and Michigan representatives were uninvited from a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Windsor, Ontario, President Trump praised the administration for the deal in a social media post. The bridge is named for Canadian hockey icon Gordie Howe. Pedestrians and bicyclists carrying proper identification will be able to cross the bridge for free starting August 5. The new span will provide competition for the existing Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
