Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, warned that global energy security faces a serious threat unless the United States and Iran improve oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway, which handles approximately 20% of the world's oil traffic, has seen a substantial slowdown in shipping as hostilities intensify. The U.S. military has conducted consecutive nights of strikes against Iranian targets, including coastal surveillance, air defense systems, and missile storage facilities. These operations follow Iran's reimposition of a naval blockade, which the administration noted was a result of Iran violating a recent memorandum of understanding. While Iran maintains that the Strait of Hormuz is within its sovereignty and demands a U.S. withdrawal, the administration announced that the strikes aim to degrade Iranian military capabilities. Oil prices have risen in response to the conflict, with analysts suggesting that depleted global inventories and the ongoing blockade could push prices toward $100 per barrel.
