Jason Fichtner warns of potential service delays as the Social Security Administration prepares its final July payment for millions of retirees.

Jason Fichtner, executive director of the Retirement Income Institute, warned that the Social Security Administration may face continued service delays and breakdowns as the agency navigates staffing cuts and outdated computer systems. These operational challenges come as the agency prepares to distribute the final regularly scheduled payment for July on Wednesday, July 22. The payment is designated for retirees, Social Security Disability Insurance recipients, and survivor beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and the end of the month. While most recipients receive payments on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month based on their birth date, those who began collecting benefits before May 1997 or those receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) typically receive payments on the third day of the month. The administration announced that the agency is currently struggling to keep pace with timeliness. To ensure a smooth transition into retirement, experts suggest applying for benefits up to four months before the desired start date.
