Pedro Sanchez calls for political pact to combat climate change as wildfires ravage Spain and France

Pedro Sanchez visited a fire-ravaged area in Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid, where more than 30 villages were evacuated. During the visit, Pedro Sanchez called for a pact between political parties to address climate change, stating that the destruction of wealth by extreme weather is a matter of science and facts rather than politics. The visit comes as Spain and France grapple with intense wildfires fueled by a severe heatwave. In Spain, a massive blaze in Guadalajara has scorched approximately 32,000 hectares, while the Madrid region declared a national emergency as fires forced the evacuation of 19,000 people. Meanwhile, France requested European Union assistance to manage a major wildfire on its Atlantic coast, which has already displaced over 18,800 people. Experts note that human-driven climate change is making these extreme weather events more frequent and severe. Data shows that wildfires in Europe have already burned more land in 2026 than the annual average of the past two decades.
