A raging wildfire in Greece has caused significant destruction to the Porto Germeno resort, with gale-force winds making containment efforts difficult for hundreds of firefighters. The fire, which broke out near the coastal village of Agios Vasileios on Friday, has reached the sea and damaged numerous homes. Theodore Giannaros, a wildfire meteorologist at the National Observatory of Athens, described the local environmental damage as "inconceivable." While the fire continues to be a major front, the wildfire emergency across much of western Europe has eased. In southwestern France, the Gironde fire has been contained within its perimeter, allowing approximately 198,000 people to return home. However, a second French fire in the Var region remains active, and major fires in Spain and Portugal are no longer advancing. Climate experts note that Europe is the fastest-warming continent, with rising temperatures and prolonged drought leaving vegetation drier and more combustible, allowing fires to burn more intensely.
