Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Amidst Intense Satellite Competition
Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday to address mounting debt and heavy competition from low-earth-orbit satellite providers. The company, a subsidiary of EchoStar, struggled to repay $1.5 billion in bonds that matured on August 1. The restructuring will allow the company to reorganize its finances while continuing to serve its current customers. During the reorganization, Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation will shift its focus from residential broadband services toward enterprise, government, and defense-led platforms. This strategic move comes as the company lost 59,000 net broadband customers in the second quarter, a significant drop from the previous year. The company noted that the loss of subscribers to competitors like Starlink is structural rather than cyclical. As part of the restructuring, the company will lay off 400 employees. Robert Del Genio has been appointed as Chief Restructuring Officer to lead the process.
