Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismisses commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi as Ukraine faces leadership crisis and mass protests

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed Oleksandr Syrskyi as the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. The decision follows a period of intense leadership instability triggered by the removal of the popular defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. The administration moved to replace Syrskyi, a traditional commander often associated with Soviet-era military doctrines, with Mykhailo Drapatyi, a battle-hardened general. The dismissal comes after rioters took to the streets of Kyiv and other cities to demand Syrskyi's removal. Many citizens, particularly younger generations, favored the modernizing approach of Fedorov, who championed technological advancements like drone warfare. In contrast, Syrskyi faced criticism for his unsparing reputation and the heavy costs of certain military maneuvers. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Syrskyi for his role in defending the capital during the initial 2022 invasion.
