Volodymyr Zelensky Pleads for Western Air Defenses Following Deadly Russian Missile Strikes on Kyiv
Volodymyr Zelensky renewed his plea for Western air defense systems following a series of intense Russian missile and drone attacks that struck the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight. The strikes, which targeted the capital and surrounding regions, resulted in at least nine deaths and 30 wounded in the city alone, with 14 civilians killed and 87 injured across the country in the last 24 hours. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine faces a critical shortage of US-made Patriot interceptors, which are necessary to down advanced ballistic missiles. During the conflict, the administration announced a shift in strategy regarding these systems. While President Trump had previously suggested allowing Ukraine to manufacture their own Patriot interceptors, he expressed hesitation during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David. Trump said he was concerned about the risk of Ukraine eventually using the technology against the United States. Zelensky urged Western partners to provide these systems immediately, noting that every missing interceptor results in direct casualties for the Ukrainian people.
